7 Lesser Known Facts About Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep is the iconic American actress of this generation.  She has acted in films such as The Living Sea, Music of the heart and Mamma Mia. She has acted in over 15 Broadway plays so far. Although she didn’t set out with dreams of being a film star, she did want to do a lot of plays which she seems to have achieved. She made her film debut with a small role in the film Julia with many of her scenes and lines being cut out. At that point she is quoted to have said that she had lost all hope and was pondering quitting acting. But then came Robert Di Niro’s offer to act opposite him in The Deer Hunter which Meryl took on with gusto.

Here are some lesser known facts about her:

  1. She almost became a lawyer2

When she graduated from Yale, she had applied to law schools with dreams of becoming a famous lawyer. But fortunately, she missed her interview and went on to give us inspiring and truly moving performances.

  1. She left her Oscar in the bathroom in 19793

It was the year Meryl Streep was nominated for her role in Kramer vs Kramer. A funny story that she still fondly remembers from that memorable night is of when she went to the bathroom and accidently forgot her Oscar trophy in there.

  1. Meryl and her daughter played the same role in the movie Evening4

In this iconic movie based in the 1950’s, Meryl Streep’s daughter Mamie played the role of a younger Lila Wittenborn. Meryl played the older version of the same role.  Although it didn’t do as well in the box office, it did seem like mother-daughter had fun shooting together.

  1. Meryl Streep has a deviated septum5

Meryl Streep has a septum in her nose that is crooked. Although it is easily curable, for reasons unknown, Meryl Streep refuses any medical help to fix it.

  1. She did not want to do The Iron Lady6

Meryl Streep at that point of time was not fond of Margaret Thatcher and refused to portray her in the biopic. But after immense persuasion from the director Phyllida Lloyd who told her she would be perfect for the role, she agreed to do it. Meryl Streep went on to win her third Oscar for her role in The Iron Lady.

In the movie Manhattan, Meryl appears as Allen’s ex-wife. This is the only movie in history that the ever worked together on. Meryl said that Woody did not like any changes in the script and made her stick to the line given. Perhaps this is why they never worked together again since it is well known that Meryl like improvising with the character she plays.

  1. She has kept a souvenir from The Devil wears Prada8

In the movie where she acts as the slave driver of a world renowned magazine, Meeryl is seen to wear fashionable sunglasses in most of the scenes. After the filming was over, she kept the sunglasses and they can again be seen in the song ‘Money Money’ from her film Mamma Mia.

Meryl Streep is married to sculptor Don Gummer and has four children with him Henry (musician), Mamie(actress), Grace and Louisa (model). She has won more than 157 awards in her lifetime and was nominated for over 400 awards. She has won three Academy Awards for Kramer vs Kramer, Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady. Many world renowned universities have also given her Honorary Doctorates in Arts.
